If you need to see a doctor and and our office is closed, please call the Urgent Care Clinic at (650) 696-4427. It is open 7 days a week, including some evenings. If it is an emergency, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
What questions should I ask about my gastroenterologist?
Your gastroenterologist (GI) is a trained specialist in digestive diseases. Asking his or her experience in treating a particular disorder may give some indication to you of your gastroenterologist’s experience. He or she is more likely to perform a high quality colonoscopy procedure for you than other non-GI physicians who perform colonoscopy. Most gastroenterologists perform 500 or more procedures annually. In general the more procedures performed the more technically proficient he or she will be in removing even large polyps. The more time taken examining the colon tends to yield better polyp detection, so you may want to know how much time is taken by your gastroenterologist to look for polyps (> 6 minutes). The detection rate of precancerous polyps by your doctor should also be at the average rate of their occurrence in the general population or higher (>25%). If it is much lower, this may indicated an inadequate examination of the colon. Finally, you may want to know the complication rate from procedures performed by your gastroenterologist (1 per 1000).
